Just what is a domain name?
A domain name is a Web address. The domain name is mapped to an IP address (which represents a physical point on the Internet). Thus, a domain name locates an organization or other entity on the Internet. When someone types a domain name into a Web browser, the requested Web page will open. For example, the domain name www.yourpersonaldomain.com locates an Internet address for "yourpersonaldomain.com."

A domain name consists of a top-level and a second-level domain. The "com" part of the domain name reflects the purpose of the organization or entity and is called the top-level domain (TLD) name. The part of the domain name located to the left of the dot (" . ") — "yourpersonaldomain," in this case — is called the second-level domain (SLD) name. The second-level domain name—being the "readable" part of the address—thus refers to the organization or entity behind the Internet address. Second-level domain names must be unique on the Internet and registered with an Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN)-accredited registrar.
How do I set my domains nameservers?
In order for a domain name to work with any hosting account, the domain name's DNS (Domain Name Servers) must be pointed to the hosting account's name servers. Your hosting company will provide the correct DNS addresses (minimum of 2). Frequently, hosting companies will also provide an IP address for the Name Servers. We do not require an IP, only the Name Servers.

To Modify the Name Servers for Your Domain Name Using the new Domain Control Center

  1. Log in to your Account Manager.
  2. Under the Domain Names section, select Manage Domains. The Domain Control Center opens.
  3. In your list of domain names, use the checkboxes to select the domain name you want to modify.
  4. Above your list of domain names, click Nameservers.
  5. On the Custom Name Servers tab, type in the name servers (at least 2) for your hosting account.
  6. Click OK.

It usually takes about 4-8 hours for .com and .net domains and about 24-48 hours for all other domain extensions before name servers on other networks are able to access the information after the central registry gets it. This period is referred to as the propagation period.

If you have bought a BASICHOST.net, ManageMyHosting or Dedicated ManageMyBox Package and a ManageMyName domain to get it to function you will need to use the nameserver details in your welcome e-mail and use them with the above steps to point your domain to your package

Registering Your Own Nameservers (ns*.yourdomain.com)

Domain hosts are not required unless you intend to set up your own DNS server. Please DO NOT enter "www" as your host name. This is not a redirection service--it will not direct your domain to an IP address.
